University Preparatory Academy
The PTSO is always seeking help with events and fundraising, including but not limited to:
BBQ Coordinators - For people who love planning parties, this is a catered event for the entire UPA community. Organize advertising, student club representatives, work with the caterer and the Cathedral of Faith staff to set up a casual dinner and evening of mingling.
Auction committee - solicit donations from companies or the UPA community for inclusion in the auction at the annual BBQ.
Essay contest judges - seeking community members to help read and evaluate student essays during the annual contest held near the beginning of the school year. You will not be reading essays from your child's grade level. Contact Nathalie Tran
Ice Cream Social - help scoop ice cream and pass out toppings for ice cream socials.
Adopt-a-Teacher - families have the opportunity to 'adopt' one or more teachers during teacher appreciation week and before winter break. Teacher preference sheets are provided so that you can take the teachers' wishes into consideration when gift-giving.
Box Tops - help gather and prepare box tops so that they can be submitted for "free money" for UPA.
Used Uniform Sales - help clean and sell used uniforms. Most assistance is needed during June and August. Contact Lisa Martin
New Parent Coffee - assist with setting up a casual breakfast for new families, including a Q&A session with some teachers/administrators and veteran parents. Please note: this event has been cancelled for 2021-22, since student orientation is online.
Teacher Appreciation Meals - arrange for catering, and help set up or the Teacher Appreciation breakfasts or luncheons. Usually held the week before school starts in August, in mid-December before winter break, and in May during Teacher Appreciation week.
Grade Level Representatives - organize events for families in a specific grade level. For example, 9th grade bowling night.
UPA Night Out Coordinator - this person arranges for periodic group events that can be enjoyed by the entire UPA community. Examples might include UPA Night at the SJ Giants, or at the sympony.
Carnival Coordinator - work closely with staff at UPA to throw carnivals on campus, usually 1-2/semester. Advertise for volunteers to help man game and snack stations.
Lost & Found - work with faculty & staff to collect all lost & found items on campus, and display them monthly (or bi-monthly).
Furry Friends Coordinator - work with administration and Furry Friends nonprofit organization, to schedule therapy dog visits on campus 2-3 x/year.
Club Liaison - ensure that student clubs are aware of funding opportunities through the PTSO, and help them with administrative hurdles.
Workplace in the Classroom - we're always looking for ways to tie education to real-life experience! This person would coordinate external business experiences, whether it's parent guest speakers in the classroom or corporate partnerships for class projects.
If you are interested in organizing an event our community would enjoy, please contact any member of the PTSO board. Some events held in the past that need volunteers to occur include: UPA nights at sporting or fine arts events, additional carnivals, family game nights, an "on-call" person to pick up items (like pizza) for teachers during class hours, guest speakers. If you have ideas for community building while we are distance learning, we welcome those.
